A slow sink is an annoyance. A clogged main sewer line can push wastewater back into your home. The first step is figuring out which one you’re dealing with, and the biggest clue is how many drains are affected.
One Slow Drain Usually Means a Local Clog
If only one sink, tub or shower is slow, the clog is almost always close to that fixture. Common causes:
- Hair and soap buildup in bathroom sinks, tubs and showers
- Grease, food scraps and coffee grounds in kitchen sinks
- Small objects that slipped down the drain
What You Can Safely Try
- Use a flat-bottomed sink plunger with a few inches of water in the basin.
- Pull the stopper and clear out any hair.
- Use a hand drain snake for hair clogs in tubs and showers.
- Clean out the P-trap under the sink, with a bucket underneath to catch the water.
We recommend skipping chemical drain cleaners. They often don’t reach the real clog, they can damage older pipes, and they make the drain hazardous for anyone who opens it later.
Warning Signs of a Main Sewer Line Clog
Your main sewer line carries everything from the house to the city sewer or your septic system. When it clogs, the symptoms show up in more than one place:
- Several drains are slow at the same time
- The toilet gurgles when you run the sink or the washer
- Water comes up in the tub or shower when you flush
- Water or sewage backs up at a basement floor drain
- You notice a sewage smell inside or around the house
Backups usually appear at the lowest drain first, which in many Northeast Ohio homes is the basement floor drain.
What Causes Main Line Clogs
- Tree roots growing into older pipes
- Grease that hardens inside the line over time
- “Flushable” wipes, paper towels and other items that don’t break down
- Sagging, cracked or collapsed sections of pipe
What to Do if You Suspect a Main Line Clog
- Stop running water and flushing toilets
- Don’t pour in chemical drain cleaners
- Call a plumber
A main line clog isn’t a DIY job. Clearing it takes professional drain equipment, and if clogs keep coming back, the line may need a closer look to find out why.

Drain Clog FAQs
How do I know if my main sewer line is clogged?
The biggest clue is more than one drain acting up at once: gurgling toilets, water coming up in the tub when you flush, or a backup at a basement floor drain.
Can I clear a main sewer line clog myself?
We don’t recommend it. Main line clogs need professional equipment, and a DIY attempt can make a backup worse.
Do chemical drain cleaners work?
Sometimes, on minor clogs. But they often don’t reach the blockage and can damage pipes. A plunger or drain snake is the safer choice for a single slow drain.
Why does my drain keep clogging?
Recurring clogs usually point to buildup deeper in the line, tree roots or a problem with the pipe itself. A professional drain cleaning can clear the line and help find the cause.
