Why Your Water Heater Works Harder in Winter

A man wearing safety glasses and gloves uses a wrench to adjust a valve on a water heater in a garage or utility room. A furnace and unfinished drywall are visible in the background.

(and When to Repair or Replace It)

In winter, the water coming into your home can be 20 to 30 degrees colder than in summer, so your water heater has to work much harder to heat it.

Sediment buildup makes that worse. If hot water runs out faster, takes longer to recover, or you hear popping or rumbling, a flush or repair usually helps. If the tank is 10 or more years old or leaking, it’s usually time to replace it.

Nothing ruins a January morning like a cold shower. If your hot water seems to disappear faster once the weather turns, you’re not imagining it. Here’s what’s going on, and how to tell whether you need a tune-up, a repair or a new water heater.

Why does hot water run out faster in winter?

Two reasons. First, colder incoming water takes more energy and time to heat. Second, minerals in our water settle at the bottom of the tank as sediment. That layer insulates the water from the burner, so the heater runs longer and delivers less.

Signs your water heater needs attention

  • Hot water runs out faster than it used to
  • Popping, rumbling or banging from the tank
  • Rusty or cloudy hot water
  • Water pooling around the base
  • The pilot light keeps going out (gas models)
  • It takes much longer to heat back up after a shower

Should I repair or replace my water heater?

Is tankless worth it?

A tankless water heater heats water only when you need it, so you don’t run out during back-to-back showers, and it takes up far less space. Tankless units need a yearly flush to stay efficient, especially with Ohio’s hard water. Right now we’re offering a Rinnai tankless flush and fill for $49 (regularly $89) through October 29.

What about my pipes?

Winter is also frozen-pipe season. If your water heater sits in a cold garage or basement corner, the pipes around it are at risk too. See how to protect your pipes before the first freeze for a quick checklist.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a water heater last?

Tank water heaters typically last 8 to 12 years. Tankless units can last 20 years with yearly maintenance.

How often should I flush my water heater?

Once a year for most homes, and more often with hard water.

Why does my water heater make popping noises?

Usually sediment at the bottom of the tank. A flush often fixes it.
